Gardening

Seeds

By far the gift I want the most. I’m a few years into my gardening journey but considering how much I love gardening, I am always surprised how unoften I get seeds. Do I care what kind, absolutely not. Will I try them even if they aren’t the exact kind on my list, absolutely. It’s a fantastic value for the price and I truly wish more people in my family would just find random packs and gift them to me.

Plant Terrarium

My dad has a gift with house plants that I just don’t. He loves taking cuttings and getting them to root. I had to get him this gift last Christmas as a way to add a certain aesthetic to his growing, so it makes a great gift for the houseplant lover in your life. Plus if you like to grow herbs, sweet potatoes, or tomatoes from cuttings, this is also a way to keep it cute!

Hori Hori Gardening Knife

Digging, cutting, and measuring all in one tool. This is something I’ve been eyeballing for a while, but just don’t want to spend the money on, which is why it makes for a fantastic gift! It’s a great multi-tasker for the gardener in your life and will be great for putting seeds and transplants in during spring time.

Grow Sleeves

If you know a gardener, they you probably also know they hate gloves. When I’m gardening, I want to feel the plant in my had because it’s hard to feel if you’re being gentle enough with gloves, and they are bulky. I also hate being eaten alive by mosquitos and I’m super fair skinned so these gloves are amazing and a staple in my wardrobe for summer gardening. Plus when it comes to squash and okra that have spines, these keep my arms and hands from itching too much. I also gave a pair to both of my grandparents since they have very thin skin and they still like to go outside.

Burpee SuperSeed Seed Starting Tray

Imagine how it’s the holidays and you just gifted some seeds, well it’s too cold to plant now, buuuut you could plant inside. These seed starting trays are still some of my favorite for lettuces, cabbages, and herbs. They don’t require a lot of soil to get started and their pop-out makes it super easy to remove. It comes with a tray so you can easily bottom water it (to prevent damping off), and it has lasted me a few seasons at this point.

Mushroom Grow Kit

If you read my post on Growing Mushrooms for Beginners, you know that when that great guy in my life got me this grow kit, it started a whole new side project. I had no idea at the time that it would turn into that, but it really got me inspired to think of this aspect of gardening. If you are looking for someone who might like learning about mushrooms, this is a great start!

Ball Wide Mouth or Regular Mouth Lids

These are great for anyone who cans their own food like jellies, jams, or potentially even more types of food. With them having limited use potential, only being able to use them once (or may be two or three times if they are a rebel canner) then having extras are always great. Plus believe me when I say, don’t buy the packages with the rings. We will almost always have too many rings.

Sourdough Starter

I have tried to grow my own sourdough from the yeast in the air, but it can be very discouraging after a failed batch or two. Mold can get in or it just never takeoff. This is a great way to boost that process with this delicious starter. Still rehydrate and feed for about a week which means you can have sourdough for the new year!

Silly Gifts

Chicken Lover Coffee Mug

I don’t have this exact version, I have a tumbler of the same print and I absolutely love it. It’s my go to for cold beverages, but this coffee mug is great for the coffee (and chicken!) lover in your life. Also, do I have chickens, absolutely not. Do I still love and have my tumbler. 100%

Trespassers will be Composted Sign

I got this as a gift from my boss and I have it my plant nursery. It’s always a fun reminder how supportive my work family is of both my personal and professional life.

Gardener of the Year Set

I absolutely squealed when I got this coffee mug for a gift. I thought it was the cutest thing and with the keychain and socks, it makes for a complete gift.

Gifts for Kids

Root Viewer for Kids

This can be a fun way to help the young ones in your life learn more about plants and maybe about one of your favorite hobbies. I may subject my niece to that a bit. This can be a good way to get the kiddo in your life experienced with gardening and I can almost guarantee it is going to be part of some science curriculum once they hit kindergarten, first or second grade.

Under $50: Cluckin Good Deals

If you are for gifts in this price range you are in luck. You can do a lot more and with good quality here. This is great for a more meaningful gift without breaking the bank. Perfect for good friends, close family, or consider pairing a few of these together (or mixing other items) for a memorable gift package!

Gardening

Seeds

You thought I was kidding when I said I wanted seeds. Well here is a larger kit of them. Will you even see this in the $50+ range. Yes. Because a gardener always wants seeds and will take nearly any heirloom seeds you give them.

Home Plus Cooling Neck Fan

I had no idea this existed until the first day of school of the 2025 school year. I saw a few teachers and administrators using it and standing outside in 100+ degree temperatures it had my interest piqued. I immediately bought one for me and almost everyone in my family. It has a cooling plate and a fan that is so nice to keep cool. When it comes to gardening in the summer, I bring it outside with me every time.

Fiskar’s Plant Starter Tool Set

I love me some cheap products, but tools is not always the thing to be cheap on. I have had so many shovels and pruners break or rust on me in no time. My favorite pruners are fiskars and the other products I have work well and have lasted a few seasons.

Herb Mesh Drying Rack

I got this for Christmas and I love it for air drying medicinal herbs especially. We all get way too much basil every year along with other herbs like rosemary, thyme, and maybe even peppers and this is a great way to preserve them and keeping them from blowing away.

Sourdough Gift Set

If you know your person already has a sourdough starter, or maybe you are purchasing a starter for them, consider getting this sourdough gift set. Is it 100% necessary, no. Is it fun to have the fancy banneton and special jar for Dough-lene, absolutely. I use mine on a regular basis just because it makes it easier to make round loaves and make more intricate scores.

Sourdough gift set

Plant Lady Hat

I have this hat and a ball cap. Come summer time, I’m going for this one due to the large brim and adjustable tie. Plus the cute font on the top just makes me happy.

Mini Green House with Light

You may have gotten the root grower, but now you can also get a mini green house. If you live in a cool climate, it might be a while before you can put seeds out, so you can have your little one start some plants even in the cool of winter with this light and greenhouse set.

Over $50: Gifts in Full Bloom

I’m so very fortunate my family has gotten these gifts for me over the course of the last few years. These are gifts perfect for a focal point. They have lasting power that will keep your loved one engaged in gardening and homesteading all year.

Gardening

Seeds

This was the seed starting kit that DH got me that I fell in love with. There are so many types of heirloom seeds in here, aside from beans, you won’t be missing a thing. Lettuce, herbs, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, okra, and so much more. So incredibly thankful I got this as an anniversary gift a few years ago when I got started on my full blown gardening journey.

Greenstalk Grow Tower

Don’t have a lot of space for all of those seeds? I didn’t. Which is why I opted in for the Greenstalk Garden tower. You can grow 30+ plants in less than 4 square feet. I was able to grow cucumbers, strawberries, and onions pretty easily.

Presto Canner

I chose this canner because it’s what my grandparents use. It’s simple, accurate, and while T-Fal does make a cheaper one, Presto works on just about all cook tops, including a glass top.

Pressure canner gift

Outdoor Camping Stove

I got this gift for myself because here in the south it gets to be 100+ degrees outside and I did not want to heat up my kitchen and make it more unpleasant than it already is. If your gift recipient already has a canner or a large pot for water bathing, consider getting this as an add on. Paired with a propane tank, it will keep the heat out of the kitchen and a propane tank lasts months of 90+ minute pressure cooks.

Propane cook top

Dehydrator

I won’t tell you to buy a freeze dryer, unless you want to buy one for me, but I do recommend a dehydrator. It’s great for dehydrating herbs for seasonings, teas or tinctures, making chili powder, I saved the skins from making tomato sauce to make a tomato bullion, jerky, and there is so much more you can make with it.

Hydroponic Garden

Over 10 years ago, I didn’t really see myself as wanting to grow things or garden, but little did I realize it still ran through my bones. Even in a small apartment, I wanted fresh lettuce and herbs at home and this is a great way to get someone started even if they don’t think they have a green thumb. I like this brand and have a few of them constantly going so I never run out of my favorite herbs and a steady supply of lettuce.

Smart Watering System

I work a full time job and when planning my garden outside, I knew I’d have to have a system to water, especially in the heat of the south. I used this Rain Point system because I can set schedules and turn on my sprinklers right from my phone or have a plan set up. With multiple zones, I can control about 200 square feet pretty easily especially when paired with this irrigation system.

Notable Mentions: Books

I’m a firm believer you can never stop learning and growing (in knowledge as much as plants!). That’s why even though I rarely get to sit down and read a book, I am always listening to a book. Below are some of my favorites available in print, ebooks, or Audible.

  1. Restoration Agriculture by Mark Shepard | Audible
  2. Dirt to Soil by Gabe Brown | Ebook | Audible
  3. Water for Any Farm by Mark Shepard | Ebook | Audible
  4. You Can Farm by Joel Salatin | Ebook |Audible
  5. Your Successful Farm Business by Joel Salatin | Ebook | Audible

Planting One Last Thought

If you’ve made it this far, bless you — clearly you’re either shopping for a gardener or you are the gardener, which honestly… same. I hope these ideas helped you dig up something fun, useful, or at least slightly better than the “mystery trowel” we all get stuck with at some point.

If something here caught your eye (or your cart), it would mean the world if you pinned this post to save it for later or dropped a comment to tell me what made your wishlist. I truly love hearing what other growers are obsessed with — we’re all just out here trying to keep our plants alive and ourselves cool in 100° weather. Plus it helps give me gift ideas I can give to my family.

Wishing you a holiday season full of cozy nights, good soil, and gifts that actually get used in the garden. 🌱🎄

I’m Allison

A picture of me! I like to get my hands dirty figuratively and literally by gardening, cooking, canning, and finding more self sufficient ways to live in the urban homestead.

I’m a city girl with country roots. My grandparents farmed and now I want to connect to them and by homesteading in the suburbs. I wanted to start this blog to help connect to other homesteaders out there, share recipes, homesteading tips, my garden journey, and things I use around my house to make life a little bit easier.

In a perfect world I would be able to start my official homestead on the land my family has cultivated for years and spend the days taking care of my father and grandparents on the farm. While that is unlikely, since I never want to charge for information, if you’d like to contribute to my dream of having a farm/homestead consider donating in lieu of buying a course/cookbook, using an affiliate link or if you are local purchasing plants, produce or sourdough.
